Turmeric is a spice that’s been used for thousands of years in Asian cultures but recently it’s popularity has really boomed – and for good reason. Many people are adding turmeric into their meal recipes or even taking turmeric supplements to reap some of its several health benefits. Curcumin, one of the main components in turmeric, is thought to be behind many of these benefits due to its powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
Here’s three reasons to add in a daily dose of turmeric to your life if you haven’t already:
1. It can alleviate arthritis pain.
Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of disability in the U.S. – affecting over 30 million Americans. A study in 2016 found that turmeric decreased pain while improving the ability to perform daily tasks and their quality of life. The patients were also able to decrease the number of pain-meds or NSAIDs they needed while taking turmeric.
2. It can improve memory.
Curcumin, the major component of turmeric, may sharpen your mind through improved memory and higher cognitive ability. A 2018 study found that taking 90mg of curcumin twice a day helped participants improve their memory and attention. Other studies have proposed that turmeric may play a role in preventing/treating Alzheimer’s disease.
3. It can help treat diabetes.
Multiple studies have looked at turmeric’s ability to treat various factors associated with diabetes. In a systematic review, researchers found that the curcumin in turmeric was effective in improving insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia.
